This study explores structured knitwear design produced on a Silver Reed flat-bed punch-card knitting machine. The project focuses on translating custom punch-card pattern logic into physical knit textiles while managing yarn tension, needle bed setups, and gauge parameters.
Visual Communication & Marker Rendering
Translating tactile machine-knit swatches into visual design concepts, this piece pairs the physical knit sample with expressive contour figure drawings and marker renderings. Key technical elements include:
- Punch-Card & Machine Parameters: Custom pattern drafting for 24-stitch repeat punch-card mechanisms, tension calibration, and gauge mapping on a Japanese flat-bed machine.
- Fashion Illustration & Drape Simulation: Marker rendering techniques applied over fluid contour line drawings to simulate realistic yarn weight, pattern scale, and fabric drape on the figure as worn.
- Textile & Swatch Integration: Direct side-by-side presentation of physical machine-knit swatches and dimensional figure renderings to document fabric behavior, pattern placement, and garment silhouette.
